BUILDING COLLAPSE AND GETTING IT RIGHT

Building Collapse: Getting it Right

Building collapse has been of serious concern within the contemporary Nigerian society.  This anomaly has constituted a colossal harm to the country at large.   The alarming increase of building collapse calls for an apt and urgent overhauling.  Despite the warnings and repeated calls by experts and many other Nigerians, there seem to be no end to this anomaly. It is not surprising that developers and contractors continue to flaunt building code with default structures that endanger the lives and properties of citizens.  A visit to the collapsed scenes makes one to wonder why such buildings were allowed to stand in the first instance and also shows the extent people can go to cut corners at the expense of property safety and lives.  As a safety outfit, (Safety Consultants and Solution Providers), it is germane to quickly intensify sincere calls and efforts to ensure that the malady is ameliorated.

The collapsed building at Ebute Metta in Lagos is the second in the last two months.  In February this year, a three-storey building collapsed in Yaba area where not fewer than four people were confirmed dead. In November last year a twenty-one-storey building still under construction in Ikoyi collapsed killing the owner and forty-two others. As always, the usual trading of blames on who was responsible for the accident has once again taken the Centre stage.   It is disheartening that despite the availability of an expansive crop of professionals in this built-up environment and a well thought out building code; we are continuously confronted by incessant building collapse. The crux of the matter is that the input and advice of professionals and the enforcing will of the executive are always jettisoned on the altar of ignorance, mismanagement, selfishness, corruption and greed.

Against this backdrop, Safety Consultants and Solution Providers make a case for periodic monitoring and deformation of buildings with immediate public action.  Sincere safety action here is the difference. This will ensure safety of lives and properties and restore confidence of investors and the public as it paves way for other drastic amendment and actions to overhaul and safeguard the building industry.

In our continued quest of upholding and maintaining safety standard and principles, Safety Consultants and Solution Providers is open providing safety insights and collaborations to promote public and building safety.  We wish to reiterate our commitment in advocating for safety and strengthening safe buildings especially in the Centre of excellence.
