INSTITUTIONALISING SAFETY CAMPAIGNS: A WAKE-UP CALL
As long as we live and work, safety is an important thing. For umpteenth times, workforces continue to advocate for safety campaigns and awareness with a view that premium protection and cover of their workforce is safely secured. Safety awareness has continued to be top priority even though many sectors take safety campaigns casually as most organisations are careless when it comes to safety. Concisely, most workforce are only reactive when things happen and run and down. It is imperative that safety awareness be part of our policy and culture as it is better to be enlightened and put preventive measures rather than waste time and resources for compensation. As such, the world must be prepared always to teach on safety and compliance for corporate economic development and prosperity.
Safety awareness is hinged on protecting the environment and the wellbeing of employees as a key component of enshrining operational excellence. It is an approach to educate people to improve safety and drastically reduce the number of work-related injuries and deaths knowing fully well that a well-informed sensitised workforce and citizenry is the bedrock of a prosperous nation. Conversely, safety campaign is a life saver especially in the precarious times we are in and in many areas where the level of safety awareness is presumably low. On that premise, we must make safety first a way of life within and outside the workplace.
At Safety Consultants and Solution Providers (SCSP), we are worried by the continuous disregard for safety campaigns. We will therefore not relax on our compliance drive for safety attainment. As a matter of urgency, we call on education stakeholders to inculcate and include safety in school curriculum for early adoption and should be immortalised as everyone’s business in a manner that makes citizen’s participation mandatory and crystal clear. Also, we encourage safety and health department of organisations to periodically embark on seminars and drills on safety so that employees and the general public are regularly apprised of the right safety practices. This can include legislations on safety compliance, safety inspections and adherence to safety policies and practices. Even something as simple as teaching workers safety acronyms or carrying out safety drills will get people continuously thinking about safety.
