Risk Strategies For The Hospitality Industry

Accidents are generally sudden and unexpected occurrence that leaves one with undesired outcomes such as wounds or losses. Accidents could occur during construction and destruction activities, resulting in injury, mostly incurred by workers on the worksite. Accidents might occur during site investigation, road traveling, a survey of a project, outdoor activities, and so on.

Does your organization integrate the management of risk and opportunity Have you evaluated non-traditional risk exposures? These are critically important questions as today’s increasingly complex business environment exposes hospitality companies to numerous risks.

‘A man notices an electric wire spark in the household compound but decides to ignore may boomerang to fire outbreak. A worker may disregard car tire air leakage then an accident may occur. ‘

The purpose of this analysis was to identify the risks that influence the operation of a hospital environment, the impact, and the risk management techniques used to reduce those risks. A randomly selected resort was selected as the case study and document analysis and observation were used as data collection methods; Various resorts like IBOM ICON Hotel & Golf Resort, La Campagna Tropicana Beach Resort Ibeju-Lekki, Ikoyi Golf Club. This study found that environmental risk, business risk, and human resource risk were the most important risks that could influence the sustainability of the resort’s operations. These risks can be managed through the right combination of risk management techniques. Despite weak monitoring activities, incompetent operating procedures and inferior attitude by the workforce seem to impact the management of the resort, fast and intelligent fast and intelligent response may be able to overcome the situation and prevent the worst possible outcomes.

The 3 major questions to be answered when onboarding a risk reduction in a resort or hospitality area are as follows;

1. What are the risks that influence the management of the resort?

2. What are the impacts of these risks?

3. What are the mitigation techniques used to reduce the severity of the impacts?

If these questions are tended to expect less hazardous cases within the industrial environment.

In accordance to Lehto and Salvendy (1991), it was stated that there are three main models of accidents causation namely:

(1) Generic accident process models. (The general causes i.e., Faulty switches or devices)

(2) Error of human and dangerous behavior models. (Carelessness, callousness)

(3) Human lesions mechanism models.

Risks Are Taken

Successful organizations take calculated risks to achieve their objectives. They weigh opportunities against threats and act decisively. In other words, risk management can become a strategic competitive advantage to help hospitality organizations shift their focus from crisis response and compliance to evaluating risks in business strategies proactively. Some critical success factors that should be included in a risk management program include ass follows

  • Creation of a risk-aware culture throughout the organization.
  • Establishment of risk management objectives that are measurable and establish accountability. Establishment of infrastructure for risk management.
  • Empowerment of business areas/departments to be responsible for managing risk in accordance with the organization’s risk management approach, while rewarding risk optimization initiatives. Communication of the commitment to risk optimization by the board and its committee.
  • Management and staff training in risk identification and avoidance techniques.
  • Identification of gaps in the risk management process and filling them.
