WHAT IS OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY?
This means the protection of workers in their place of employment from risks resulting from factors adverse to their safety.
Occupational safety does not only seek to secure the safety and health of persons at work but consequently stimulates productivity in the business of the enterprise.
Here are some successful basic elements to good occupational safety:
- Employee Training and Empowerment: Before we can expect employees to follow best practices, we must educate and empower them to hold each other accountable. To achieve this, a day can be dedicated to safety training where safety tips and ideas can be shared. Putting safety in the hands of every worker can help foster accountability at all levels of the company.
- Safety Management Process: Once employees are trained, a safety management process must be put in place for them to easily identify hazards and take steps to contain them. For instance, if workers will use an aerial lift on a job site, hazards like power lines and uneven ground should be identified and address before any work is done.
It is true that not all hazards can be eliminated but most can be controlled. Workers will be faced with situations every day that force them to decide between a safe course of action and an unsafe one but with motivation and proper compliance guidelines they will be able to make the right decisions even when no one is watching.
