Fire Safety Engineering is often misunderstood and should not be reduced to firefighting equipment and emergency response.
Fire is not separate from Loss Prevention. Fire Safety Engineering is a core Loss Prevention discipline.
The more strategic question is:
“What loss are we exposed to, what barriers are protecting us, and what happens when those barriers fail?”
That question changes the conversation:
- From compliance to risk.
- From equipment to engineered barriers.
- From response to prevention and mitigation.
- From fire protection to asset protection.
- From short-term compliance to long-term business resilience.
Protecting what we have built is just as strategic as building it in the first place.

Reframing Fire Safety Within Loss Prevention
In my professional opinion, Fire Safety Engineering remains largely misunderstood.
Too often, it is taken out of the broader risk management and Loss Prevention framework and treated as an isolated safety discipline largely associated with extinguishers, fire alarms, hydrants, firewater systems and the intervention of responders after an emergency has occurred. These systems are important. But they are barriers, not the entirety of Fire Safety Engineering.
In process safety, we spend considerable time talking about loss of containment and rightly so.
But our thinking must go further.
When containment is lost, the question is not simply whether a release has occurred.
What happens next?
- Can the release ignite?
- Can the fire escalate?
- Can it affect adjacent equipment?
- Can one failed barrier become several failed barriers?
- How much of the asset could be lost before control is regained?
Why Fire Belongs in the Loss Prevention Conversation
This is why fire must sit firmly within the Loss Prevention conversation. A major fire is not simply a safety event. It can become a major asset-loss and business continuity event.
It can mean:
- Loss of life
- Loss of production
- Loss of equipment
- Loss of containment
- Loss of critical infrastructure
- Environmental liability
- Business interruption
- Reputational damage
- Loss of enterprise value
The consequences can extend far beyond the immediate incident.
Fire as a Consequence of Multiple Failures
Fire does not simply happen.
In many industrial environments, fire can be the consequence of a chain of failures:
- Process failures
- Loss of containment
- Ignition sources
- Poor material specification
- Inadequate design
- Poor maintenance
- Management of Change failures
- Human behaviour and indiscipline
- Weak operating controls
These are not simply “fire safety” issues. They are risk management and Loss Prevention issues and this is where Fire Safety Engineering becomes strategic.
From Fire Protection Equipment to Engineered Barriers
The question should not simply be: “Do we have extinguishers, detectors, hydrants and sprinklers?”
Those are necessary questions, but they are not sufficient.
The more fundamental questions are:
- What are we protecting?
- What loss are we trying to prevent?
- What hazards can initiate that loss?
- What barriers exist between the hazard and the consequence?
- How effective are those barriers?
- What happens when one or more barriers fail?
That is the essence of a barrier-based Loss Prevention approach.
Fire Protection Must Begin Before the Fire
Fire protection must begin before the fire. For operators, engineers, regulators, investors and asset owners particularly across Nigeria’s oil and gas and process industries the distinction matters.
We should not wait until a fire starts before we begin thinking about fire.
The conversation must begin much earlier:
What can release?
What can ignite?
What can escalate?
What barriers should prevent it?
What barriers should control it?
What happens if those barriers fail?
This is process safety thinking.
This is Fire Safety Engineering.
This is asset protection.
And ultimately, this is Loss Prevention.
