ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY APPROACH OF QUALITY MANAGEMENT FOR FIRE PROTECTION SERVICES

MAINTAINABILITY

The maintenance cost of maintaining or restoring a fire protection system considers –  availability of skilled labor, availability of local vendors. Fire protection products that are too sophisticated that expatriates are always needed to trouble and repair system and special orders for obtaining products due to lack of local vendors make maintenance difficult. Sometimes, such systems are abandoned or replaced by new ones and lead to high risk due to downtime in sourcing labor and materials for maintenance.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Energy consumption is a quality mark. Low energy products are commonly rated by Energy Star as A, B, C, or lower ratings depending on the power consumption and efficiency of electronic, electrical, or electro-mechanical products. USGBC LEED Green certifies systems on energy efficiency and Eco-friendliness.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

This is the responsibility of compliance to environmental friendliness free of degradation or depletion of natural resources and having long-term sustenance. The indicators of environmental sustainability are:

RE-USE: The ability to renew or re-use a fire protection system or substance leads to salvaging loss of materials, technological efforts and saves cost in the long run.

HEALTH OF ECOSYSTEMS

The ecosystem consists of life and its interactions with its environments. A fire protection system that contributes to a high margin of loss of life, whether fauna or flora leads to the extinction of biodiversity that completes food chains and web, nutrient cycles and leads to competition.

POLLUTION

Release of contaminants up to the level of pollution of any form says that the acceptable threshold has been exceeded. This can be true if the fire protection system or substances cause noise, air, water, or soil pollution.

SOCIO-ECONOMIC WELFARE

Having a high impact on the social and economic target of stakeholders is an indicator of good sustainability.

RISK OR HAZARD ASSOCIATED WITH FIRE PROTECTION SUBSTANCE: Associated risk of fire protection substances can be financial or health-wise. Some fire protection systems and substances are expensive, while others are affordable. Some fire protection substances would not cause harm for a reasonably high period of exposure, while exposure to certain fire protection substances can cause harm, like CO2. Concentrations of clean agent gases increase the level of exposure to humans.
